The Town of Ashland hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, April 19 at their municipal parking lot retrofit, which was selected as the top project of (66) submitted for the 2013 Dave Pearson Watershed Excellence Award at the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association (announced at the statewide Virginia Water Conference in March).
This project started with the Town of Ashland’s desire to create a stormwater demonstration project as an example of environmental stewardship. They turned to AMT Consulting Engineers for site planning and engineering design, who worked with Filterra Bioretention Systems of Ashland, VA and Eagle Bay USA of Richmond, VA to produce the first “boxless” Filterra BioPave installation in North America. Typical of Filterra BioPave, this project combines a functional, heavy-duty wearing surface (parking lot) of Eagle Bay Aquabric Type “L” permeable interlocking concrete pavers that detains, infiltrates and drains stormwater to a boxless Filterra Bioretention System. Filterra significantly reduces pollutants in this stormwater, including sediment, nutrients, heavy metals and oil & grease. Consequently Filterra BioPave provides complete management up to and including the 25-year storm — along with a useable parking lot!
Built in the fall of 2012 in about (6) weeks in time for the community’s important train day festival, this project was co-funded by the Town of Ashland and a Chesapeake Bay Trust “Green Streets, Green Jobs, Green Towns” grant. Public information brochures, field tours, and an onsite information site provide continuing public outreach for this project.
“Just as Filterra BioPave creates value greater than the mere sum of its’ parts, so did this project yield multiple benefits as a result of innovative cooperation with a local jurisdiction and private entities — manufacturer, engineering firms and contractors. This unique partnership model is one we at Filterra expect will repeat itself in the future throughout the commonwealth of Virginia” said Bob Bridges Director of Sales for Eagle Bay USA.
Eagle Bay USA is one of the industry’s leading manufacturers of Interlocking Concrete Pavers. Specializing in the commercial market of the Mid-Atlantic region, we provide the finest permeable hardscape products available. Our experienced sales team stands confidently behind our consistent product quality, commitment to design innovation, environmental stewardship, and excellent customer service.

The RVA Street Art Festival will bring together more than a dozen national street artists to create an outdoor gallery along Richmond’s James River Power Plant Building and Floodwall. The Festival will be centered from the Power Plant building and Floodwall near Vistas on the James and Pipeline Overlook. Invited artists will create their art on gigantic 18′ x 32′ murals.
The festival’s goal is to show the creative power of street art, liven up an other wise drab floodwall, and attract people and tourists to the outdoor art gallery that will showcase the Canal Walk and Shockoe Bottom neighborhood. The murals will remain in place for two years time when the festival will become a biennial event.
The festival will begin with an event at the VMFA with artists on stage discussing their work and the work of the collaboration.
The festival on Friday through Sunday will be centered between the Canal Walk Turning Basin and Power Plant building where spectators can come and watch the artists create their art.
The festival on Saturday, April 14 will feature the best of local Richmond with local breweries, food, music, and art on hand. View full schedule›
This festival is produced by Ed Trask and Jon Baliles, in association with Venture Richmond and the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Altria.

We are filming the setup of the first TEDxRVA here in Richmond Va. This is day one as Commonwealth Event Company installs the carpet in this very big room!
MORE FROM TEDxRVA.com/about:
A creative renaissance is transforming Richmond into an epicenter of innovation and creativity. On March 22, 2013, the inaugural TEDxRVA will bring the concept CREATE into an open forum where audience and speakers together will engage in a symbiotic process of inspiration and creation. Beside the magnificent James River in this historic city, the event takes place in The Power Plant, a building which housed the massive turbines that powered the first street cars in the United States.
As TEDxRVA unfolds, ideas will meld with action, producing a showcase of what is possible when community comes together. Empty spaces will function as blank canvases for audience engagement and spontaneous creative response. The result will be an experience reflective of, and inspired by, the dynamic topics presented by our curated line-up of innovative creatives, storytellers, entrepreneurs and community leaders. Conversations will create new connections and build frameworks for transitioning thoughts to tangible reality.
Creation is not a passive process – this event is a call to action. In embracing the spirit of TED and “ideas worth spreading,” TEDxRVA will challenge all who are involved to redefine themselves as innovators and doers.]]>

The crystal blue skies and sun-drenched beaches of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina were blanketed with a menacing plume of smoke over the Independence Day holiday.
The large, dark smoke cloud was produced by a marsh fire in Dare County, that was believed to have been sparked by holiday fireworks. Fire officials said that the fire encompassed 30 to 40 acres off Little Colington Island, located west of Kill Devil Hills.
Officials set controlled fires to combat the fire and limit the smoke impact, and the fire was expected to burn itself out. While no one and no property was impacted by the blaze, the intimidating smoke created an eery scene for the holiday beach-goers.

Our second time lapse film for artist Patrick Dougherty installed January 2012 at the Bay Area Discovery Museum is a living sculpture called Peekaboo Palace and was a new venture for RichmondTimeLapse.com as we were not onsite for this job.
We shipped our equipment out west to San Francisco and the staff and volunteers did a wonderful job setting up and maintain the equipment. With some coaching over the phone and some help from Andy (Pat’s assistant) with the GoPro close up shots we were able to edit this time lapse together!
